Lego sets come in various sizes (or number of pieces). So, the weight of each set depends largely on that value.
We wanted here to research the average weight of one Lego piece. To do that, we analyzed the data of over 2,300 Lego sets from many different themes. This data was extracted from Brickset.
The research excluded any data outliers, which have either too low or too high Lego piece weight. Also, we disregarded sets with under 30 pieces since the piece weight would probably be much higher than normal.
Here are the research results;
Average Weight of Lego Pieces
Based on the research, the average weight of one Lego piece is around 1.67 g (0.059 oz).
The average weight of a single Lego piece is about 1.67 grams (or 0.059 ounces).
This is based on analyzing over 2,300 sets from many themes. Some examples of the popular themes are City, Creator, Friends, Harry Potter, Icons, Minecraft, Ninjago, Racers, Star Wars, Technic.
Average Weight of a Lego Piece by Number of Pieces
We noticed that the average piece weight seems to differ based on the number of pieces. These are the values discovered:
| Number of Lego Pieces | Piece Weight (g) | Piece Weight (oz) |
|---|---|---|
| <500 | 1.65 | 0.058 |
| 500-999 | 1.79 | 0.063 |
| 1,000-1,499 | 1.63 | 0.057 |
| 1,500-1,999 | 1.51 | 0.053 |
| 2,000+ | 1.41 | 0.050 |
With the exception of sets under 500 pieces, the average piece weight tend to generally decrease with higher quantity of pieces in the set.
Average Weight of a Lego Set by Number of Pieces
Using the average weight of Lego pieces, we calculated the expected weight of the set for several sizes. The weights are both in kilograms and pounds. Here are the numbers:
| Number of Lego Pieces | Set Weight (kg) | Set Weight (lb) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 0.17 | 0.36 |
| 500 | 0.9 | 2.0 |
| 1,000 | 1.6 | 3.6 |
| 1,500 | 2.3 | 5.0 |
| 2,000 | 2.8 | 6.3 |
| 3,000 | 4.2 | 9.4 |
| 4,000 | 5.6 | 12.5 |
| 5,000 | 7.1 | 15.6 |
| 6,000 | 8.5 | 18.8 |
| 8,000 | 11.3 | 25.0 |
| 10,000 | 14.1 | 31.3 |
Please note that we used the above average piece weights by number of pieces to calculate these values.
Average Number of Lego Pieces by Set Weight
Again, we used the average weight of a Lego piece to find out the set size (number of pieces) for some specific weights.
Here are the values based on weight in kilograms:
| Weight of Lego Set (kg) | Number of Pieces |
|---|---|
| 0.5 | 303 |
| 1 | 559 |
| 2 | 1,227 |
| 3 | 1,987 |
| 4 | 2,837 |
| 5 | 3,546 |
| 6 | 4,255 |
| 7 | 4,965 |
| 8 | 5,674 |
| 9 | 6,383 |
| 10 | 7,092 |
And these are the numbers based on weight in pounds:
| Weight of Lego Set (lb) | Number of Pieces |
|---|---|
| 0.5 | 138 |
| 1 | 276 |
| 2 | 508 |
| 3 | 762 |
| 4 | 1,123 |
| 5 | 1,404 |
| 6 | 1,811 |
| 7 | 2,240 |
| 8 | 2,560 |
| 9 | 2,880 |
| 10 | 3,200 |
Please note that we also used the above average piece weights by number of pieces to figure out these values.
Conclusion
As found through our comprehensive research, the average weight of a single Lego Piece is about 1.67 grams (0.059 ounces).
The piece weight differs between sets based on the number of pieces. Generally speaking; the higher the quantity of pieces, the lighter the piece becomes.
Using this number, you can find the approximate weight of any Lego set based on the number of pieces and vice versa.
One important thing to note: all these numbers are just averages and may not reflect the actual numbers for Lego sets out there.
