Many people like to compare their height to others including the US. That’s one of the reasons for the great desire to get taller after 18.
We wanted to check the interest of American adults in height increase as compared between the different states. So, we did some online digging using Google search data.
The research involved looking at the search data for relevant keywords that are related to getting taller after puberty. That data was used to calculate a score for each state which was then plotted on a US map (as shown below).
The goal from all this work was to show the different levels of interest to grow taller in the various states.
Following are the full research results.

States with Highest & Lowest Interest in Getting Taller
According to our research, the interest level (or score) in getting taller for all states ranged between 8-20.
The desire to grow in height is the top in three states. They include (starting from the highest) the District of Columbia, Hawaii and Delaware. These states have a score between 18-20.
People in two other states have also a great want to grow taller which are Rhode Island and Nevada (with a score between 16-17).
The state with the absolute lowest interest in becoming taller by far is Ohio, which has a score below 9 (8.5 to be precise). The score of all other states is actually over 9.
Based on the score average (which is 12), here is a summary grouping of the 51 states:
- 22 states (43%) have a small interest in height growth, with a level that’s under 11
- 17 states (33%) have a moderate interest in increasing height, with a score between 11-13
- 12 states (24%) have a high desire to get taller, with a score that’s over 13
When it comes to the US regions, the majority of states with highest interest in increasing height are located in either the West or Northeast region. On the other hand, states with the lowest desire for height growth are mostly in the Midwest region.
Another interesting finding is that most states with top interest for getting taller have a relatively high median household income while those with lowest desire have a low income.

Research Method
Here are the steps we have taken to perform the research:
- For all 51 states including the district of Columbia, we gathered the monthly Google search volumes of relevant keywords (related to getting taller after puberty) for the past three years
- We added all the monthly search volumes for each state then divided the result by three in order to get the average annual search volume
- The annual search volume was divided over the state’s population then multiplied by a thousand to get an interest score or level
- We finally plotted the scores on a US map using color gradient in order to show the difference in interest between the various states
Conclusion
There you have it, the relative interest of adults in getting taller for each state in the US.
